MOTORING AND THE ENVIRONMENT: ATTITUDES AND FORMATION OF ATTITUDES
BILISMEN OCH MILJOEN: ATTITYDER OCH ATTITYDBILDNING
This study was initiated as part of the basis for a new government law about transportation policy in Sweden. The purpose was to investigate the attitudes toward certain policy measures aiming at reducing car use but also to study environmental attitudes in relation to automobility. A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 2000 Swedish citizens between 18 and 80 years of age. The response rate was 61%. The most acceptable policy measure for reducing private car traffic in certain parts of cities was a ban. A duty of SEK 15 per day was also regarded as quite acceptable, while a charge of SEK 2 per kilometer driven was met with a very negative attitude. Concerning variations in car use, this variation can be related to different living conditions, personal benefit of one's own car and habitual choice of the car as a transportation mean. Difficulties due to distances to various activities and lack of alternative means of transportation make it hard for many to give up the car. Environmental attitudes did not seem to affect factual car use but had an impact on the proclivity to reduce personal car use.
