THE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF A COMPLETE SYSTEM FOR THE AUTOMATIC WEIGHING OF VEHICLES IN MOTION AND COLLECTION OF TRAFFIC DATA
The major subject of this report is the summarizing of all activity in connection with the Michigan Project 52F-26, Part A, Phases II and III, a research project for the investigation of automatic weighing and dimensional measurement of vehicles in motion. Recommendations for continued research, to be designated as Part B, are included at the end of the main report in a separate chapter. Chapter 1 reviews the history of Project 52F-26 and states its scope and research objectives. Chapter 2 is the technical description of two subsystems used to weigh axles and to measure truck dimensions and of the subsystem used to measure speed and to provide classification information on vehicles in the main highway traffic stream. System block diagrams are presented and discussed, installation procedures are outlined, and equipment capabilities are delineated. Chapter 3 describes the operating procedures used in gathering data for a statistical analysis and problems encountered in the process. Results of the statistical data analysis are presented in graphical form, in most instances as a regression line describing the correlation between dynamic and static measurements. Chapter 4 contains the significant conclusions to be drawn from the data analysis and from operating observations during Part A. Chapter 5 contains recommendations for a fully automatic system to perform the same measurements made in Part A, but with modifications for improved accuracy as well as automation of operation. This complete, automatic system is recommended for development and testing as Part B of Michigan Project 52F-26.
