PRINCIPLES OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERING AND TRAFFIC ANALYSIS. SECOND EDITION

The second edition of this textbook, like the first edition, provides an entry-level transportation engineering book that focuses on highway transportation and provides the depth of coverage necessary to solve the highway-related problems that are most likely to be encountered in engineering practice. The book begins with a short introductory chapter that stresses the significance of highway transportation in U.S. society. This chapter provides a basic overview of the problems facing the field of highway engineering and traffic analysis. Subsequent chapters cover the following topics: road vehicle performance, geometric design of highways, pavement design and highway drainage, elements of traffic analysis, traffic analysis at signalized intersections, level of service analysis, and traffic forecasting. The book uses metric units in all areas except those where the profession has not yet completed the conversion (pavement design and highway level of service). In these areas both U.S. customary and metric units are provided. A U.S. customary-units version of Chapter 3 (Geometric Design of Highways) is provided in an appendix.
