THE USE OF WASTE GLASS AS AGGREGATE FOR PIPE BACKFILL AND EMBANKMENT MATERIAL
The purpose of this final report is to evaluate the use of waste glass as a construction material for use on Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) projects. The two research projects involved were: "The Use of Waste Glass as Aggregate for Pipe Backfill" and "Waste Glass as Embankment Material." While clear glass can be easily recycled back into the glass manufacturing process, colored glass cannot and is usually stockpiled or shipped to landfills. PennDOT is currently researching ways in which to utilize this waste glass. There is much interest among recyclers in the use of waste glass in construction projects to avoid shipping it to landfills. Use as pipe bedding and backfill was satisfactory. However, production of the glass material to a specific gradation and close monitoring of compaction are important considerations that need to be addressed. The use of waste glass material as an embankment material also was satisfactory, but only when glass was blended with another material to achieve compaction and stability. PennDOT will continue to research potential uses of waste glass in construction projects. Presently, it is recommended that the use of waste glass be accepted for pipe backfill and embankment material. Other usage should remain limited to current PennDOT specifications, which allow up to 10% waste glass blended with natural aggregate in unbound applications.
