WEAR FROM THE NEW GENERATION OF STUDDED TYRES. SERIES 1 NON-PROFILED TYRES

VERSCHLEISS DURCH SPIKEREIFEN DER NEUEN GENERATION. REIHE 1: NULLKONTURREIFEN

Treadless tyres with steel belts and studs of 7 mm seat diameter were compared in regard to their resistance to wear with similar tyres having textile belts and studs of 10 mm seat diameter, on pavements of concrete, asphalt and synthetic resin mortar. A traffic simulator was employed. The steel belt tyres with the smaller studs reduced the wear on concrete by one quarter, at all speeds. With rolled asphalt, the reduction in wear amounted to one-third, with gussasphalt to one half; this applied however for both asphalts only at test speeds of 80 km/hr and 100 km/hr. At 60 km/hr, no improvement was noticeable. In the case of patching mortar of epoxy resin, the wear reduction was approximately one third. The improved new tyre will only be of practical importance if studded crossply tyres are no longer allowed. The results obtained for the treadless tyres may not quantitatively be applied to normal winter tyres. /TRRL/
