THE TRANSPORT JIGSAW. MAKING THE PIECES FIT

A fundamental review of transport policy is now in progress, due to the increasing realisation that the transport trends of the past 200 years cannot be continued. However, it is difficult to know where to start, because transport affects and is affected by so many other aspects of life. The components of a new transport policy need to fit together coherently, for success to be achieved. This book presents the proceedings of a conference on this theme, held in March 1998 and organised by the Construction Industry Conference Centre Limited (CICC) in collaboration with seven other organisations. The themes of its papers are as follows: (1) responding to the new transport policy agenda; (2) lessons to be learned from the new pattern of government in Scotland; (3) demand factors and problems of different transport modes in London and South East England; (4) public transport information tasks; (5) the imapct of telecommunications on the transport market; (6) developing an integrated transport system for Athens; (7) the plan for rebuilding Manchester's city centre and introducing high-quality bus services; (8) transport in Kent Thames-side; (9) transport and health; (10) alternative fuels; (11) improving British railways through partnership; and (12) achieving the UK's integrated transport objectives.
