FACTORS AFFECTING THE VALIDITY OF STATED PREFERENCE RESEARCH

This study was designed to look for evidence as to the validity of stated preference (SP) by looking outside the transport field in two specific areas. The first was conjoint analysis in general market research, particularly in the United States. Stated preference grew out of conjoint analysis, but the two techniques diverged in the mid 1980s. The second area was experimental decision research by economists and psychologists, the motivation being that if SP is directly concerned with modelling choices, then its practice can only be improved if there is more understanding about how choices really are structured and enacted. The report makes recommendations on how SP can be improved.
