THE DIAGNOSIS OF ALKALI-SILICA REACTION: REPORT OF A WERKING PARTY. SECOND EDITION

Assessment of damaged or deteriorated structure, applied to alkali-silica reaction (ASR), necessitates answers to the following three questions: What has caused the damage or deterioration?; What is the likely future for the structure?; How can the structure be repaired or otherwise managed to obtain an economic life from it? This report deals primarily with question 1, and specifically with the diagnosis of ASR and the assessment of the role it has played in causing any visible deterioration of the structure. It suggests the procedures to be followed to produce a reasonably reliable diagnosis of ASR as a cause of damage. In some circumstances, where there is a limit on expenditure, a definitive diagnosis might not be possible. Some of the procedures described for diagnosis may also be helpful when attempting to answer question 2. The answer to question 3 is outside the scope of this report.
