FATIGUE STRENGTH OF EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE CONCRETE
DAUERFESTIGKEIT VON EPS-BETON
As an aid to the estimation of the fatigue of eps (expanded polystyrene) concrete with two different polystyrene additives (styropor, hostapor), in comparison with normal concrete, static tests with a standard and a very slow loading rate, and pulsating fatigue strength tests were carried out on a total of 192 beams. In repeated loading tests of expanded polystyrene concrete one may reckon, in the case of bending tension tests, with variation coefficients of 5 to 8%, as with normal concrete. In the case of compression tests larger variation coefficients of approximately 10% are to be expected which are more than double the values for normal concrete. The bending fatigue strength is, according to these tests, at least as high as for normal concrete, and more probably, 15% higher (crack inhibiting effect of expanded polystyrene grains). After two million load cycles of bending tension, the bending strength of the eps concretes tested was not reduced. /TRRL/
