CHAPTER 36: PLANNING FOR BICYCLE- (AND PEDESTRIAN-) FRIENDLY CAMPUSES. FROM THE GREENING OF URBAN TRANSPORT, EDITION 2.
This chapter outlines strategies for planning bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly college campuses. These forms of commuting result not only in health and fitness benefits but there are obvious cost-saving elements also. The author states that universities should: formally adopt a policy which makes a commitment to reducing the environmental impacts associated with commuting and assign responsibility for its implementation to a senior manager; carry out a comprehensive transport audit and develop environmental performance indicators for use as a basis for setting targets for improvement; and encourage modal switching to environment-friendlier forms of transport, especially public transport, walking and cycling.
