PLANNING OF ITS APPLICATIONS FOR THE PACIFIC MOTORWAY

This paper describes the planning for the implementation of intelligent transport system applications for the upgrade of the Pacific Motorway. The new Pacific Motorway will be constructed along the existing corridor and the existing traffic will essentially operate through the road construction works. To ensure efficient operations during this period, traffic management systems will need to be deployed. Following the completion of the motorway, it is expected that there will be sufficient capacity on the motorway until at least the year 2010, and the demands for traffic management will be quite different to those required during construction. The traffic management systems will be implemented as applications of an intelligent transport system. It is essential that these applications be adequately planned to meet the short term needs during construction and to be flexible enough to meet the long term needs following opening of the motorway to traffic.
