UTILISING THE INTERNET TO ASSIST IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS WITHIN SOCIETY

There are many inherent difficulties in providing up to date information to the end users of transport systems. Publishing current transport data in electronic form can provide a cost effective solution to these difficulties and so assist in the development of a more efficient transport service to society. The emergence of the Internet as an information superhighway now provides an ideal medium for relaying to the end user any alterations to services, special events or problems. The Special Interest Network for Transport in Australia (SINTA) project being undertaken by the University of Technology, Sydney, and supported by the Australian Federal Department of Transport is intended to facilitate the efforts of Australian transport organisations to place transport information on the Internet. This paper briefly introduces the SINTA project and the achievements to date, outlines the framework and applications developed for displaying both static and real time information, and initiatives undertaken to market SINTA to the Transport Industry to further benefit society.
