ROUTE COST ANALYSIS FOR FLEET MANAGEMENT USING GPS TECHNOLOGY
Route cost estimation is a critical issue for commercial fleet management as it has a potentially significant impact on fleet productivity and freight transport efficiency. However, current route cost estimation is largely based on approximate information on a vehicle's operation and fleet managers' experience, resulting in unreliable cost estimation for routine fleet management. In this paper, a route cost analysis algorithm using GPS technology is presented. A polynomial fitting procedure, based on least squares criteria, is used in this algorithm to mitigate the effects of selective availability (SA), multipath and data outages. Vehicles' spatial and temporal information of each delivery journey can be computed from GPS by using this algorithm to ensure an objective route cost estimation. The results of experiments in urban areas indicate that adequate spatial and temporal information on vehicles' operations can be derived using GPS with metre-level accuracy in terms of spatial information, and minute-level accuracy in terms of temporal sampling.
