ITS AND THE GLOBAL INFORMATION INFRASTRUCTURE: THE WAY FORWARD
As ITS develops into a deployable set of services, communications has become a major focus. ITS will require a broad range of communications capabilities and services to effectively serve its users. The Global Information Infrastructure, a world-wide convergence towards completely inter-networked communications and communications services, may eventually provide these capabilities and services. Thinkers from both ITS and GII communities have recognised the immense synergies possible if the mobile information systems required by ITS link to, or are part of, the 'anytime, anywhere' communications and data handling systems proposed by the GII. The combination of ITS and the GII would enable a variety of basic services which are currently not readily available (or not available at all), such as common priority schemes across multiple media to support mobile emergency calls. Work is under way to realise this vision in international standards organisations such as ISO, EEC and ITU, as well as think-tanks like the Cross Industry Working Team (XIWT). This paper will examine the relationship between GII and ITS, some of the possibilities for synergy between the two programs, and current international activities in the GII/ITS arena.
