REMOTE, UNATTENDED TOLL COLLECTION IN AUSTRALIA

The traditional elements of a toll collection system on a typical tollroad in Australia include a barrier style toll collection plaza with a mixture of manned and unmanned (automatic coin machine) toll collection lanes. Operation is overseen by a manned control room, which allows surveillance of all operations on the plaza. Such operations are by necessity labour intensive, requiring round the clock manning for continuous operation. The system discussed in this paper challenges the traditional style with a requirement for a barrier style toll collection plaza to be completely automatic, requiring no on-site staff for normal system operation. The remote (1 km distant) ramp plaza incorporates fully automatic machines accepting both notes and coins, providing change, and allowing full remote monitoring and control from the central plaza control room including audio and video communication with the driver. The paper includes a discussion of the technical and operational experience gained during the implementation of the system in a real environment, and how the challenges are being overcome.
