QUARRYING FOR RAIL BALLAST

The porphyry quarry at Quenast in Belgium was recently redeveloped and enhanced to be able to produce about 2Mt per year. Its new quaternary crushing and final screening section now ensures that about a third of the quarry's output meets TGV and Belgian and Dutch rail specifications. The equipment for this final processing stage includes seven crushers, four of which are Canicalaques vertical-shaft impact crushers selected to produce material of appropriate shape. The quarry's tough porphyry is suitable for all aggregate applications, including the demanding specification for high-speed rail track ballast, which requires durability and resistance to abrasion, polishing, and chemical attack. The porphyry has crushing resistance 3500kg/cm Los Angeles abrasion value 9-14, bulk density (2700kg/mü (loose 1350-1400kg/mü), and PSV 52-55. The quarry's excavation area has a series of elliptical benches. After the removal of sand and clay overburden, the rock is blasted, transported to the factory, crushed, and screened into aggregate of various sizes. Rail wagons can be loaded at up to 1000t/hr from a conveyor-supplied site.
