REINFORCED EARTH TECHNOLOGY FOR THE ARTERIAL EXPRESSWAY CORRIDOR PROJECT AT JAMMU

The distribution of the reinforced earth projects around the world at present is in approximate proportion to the level of economic development of the various regions, with a particularly high concentration of projects in Europe, North America and Japan. In India, although a number of small scale model tests and theoretical investigations have been performed by various investigators, its implementation to any actual field problem has lagged far behind. Very recently, a Reinforced Earth Retaining wall project has been executed for the Arterial Expressway Project in Jammu. The project is the first of its kind in India. The experience with this work has indicated that the application of the reinforced earth technology in place of cantilever RCC retaining wall results in a substantial saving. This paper provides a brief description of this project and a detailed comparison from the cost point of view of the reinforced earth wall with that of the corresponding conventional RCC cantilever retaining wall. The comparison brings out the cost effectiveness of the reinforced earth technology. (A
