EVALUATING TRAFFIC EDUCATION IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS

EFFEKTEN AF FAERDSELSUNDERVISNING I FOLKESKOLENS 1. OG 3. KLASSE

Traffic education in 4 suburban schools has been evaluated from a behavioral point of view. The project involved an experimental group and a control group totalling 321 children. The level was the Danish 1St and 3rd grade primary school. The experimental group was taught two lessons on crossing at street intersections, and the control group had no traffic education during that period (four weeks). The children's crossing behavior was observed just before, immediately after and two weeks after the day of the two lessons. The numbers of children stopping at the intersection increased from 26 pct to 49 pct in the experimental group - a change which is probably due to the two lessons on traffic education, while the control group had no increase in the number of stops (19 pct to 17 pct). 50 percent of the children observed, however, did not show any change when crossing the street before and after the traffic education. /TRRL/
