THE BEHAVIOR OF COLUMNS FOR THE DESIGN OF PULTRUDED FRAMES: TESTS ON ISOLATED COLUMNS
The minor-axis buckling characteristics of 12 pultruded wide flange sections are presented. The variables considered during the experimental programme were member length and cross-sectional dimensions. The tests were conducted in a purpose-built rig, designed to apply an axial load along the centreline of the members. The boundary conditions at either end of the members were such that full-restraint and pinned-restraint were provided to the major and minor-axes respectively. Testing performance was such that the predicted critical load calculated by the Southwell method using the experimental data, was similar to the maximum load attained in the test. The results tended to indicate that applying the conventional elastic buckling equation, derived by Euler, to column lengths in excess of 4.8 m provides close correlation. Cross-sectional dimensions play an increasingly important role for shorter lengths. This was indicated by the catastrophic failure of three of the columns reported herein, as a result of web/flange fracture following onset of local buckling.
