EFFECT OF SAMPLE LENGTH ON INDIRECT TENSILE TEST PARAMETERS (WITH DISCUSSION)

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the specimen thickness on the tensile strength and related engineering properties, as determined for different asphalt mixes, using the static indirect tensile test. Two basic mix types, comprising mixtures with different nominal maximum aggregate sizes and compacted with two different types of compaction hammers were evaluated. The influence of the specimen thickness on stiffness was also evaluated, although to a lesser extent. Stiffness determinations were conducted on calibrated synthetic specimens with known stiffness characteristics for comparison and test validation purposes.
