IDENTIFICATION PROBLEM OF OPEN-CHANNEL FRICTION PARAMETERS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE
A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by R.H. Khatibi, J.J.R. Williams, and P.R. Wormleaton, published in this journal (Volume 123, Number 12, December 1997), is presented. The discusser presents two perspectives of the resistance coefficient: the practical perspective in relation to its physical significance and the conceptual perspective in relation to its occurrence in the dynamic equation as an identification/calibration parameter. The discusser points out that the writers have treated the resistance parameter as a lumped coefficient so that it reflects not only the physical reality in the river, but inevitably includes the effects of a range of uncertainties such as numerical errors. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
