CIVIL ENGINEERING EDUCATION THROUGH CASE STUDIES OF FAILURES. DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

Two discussions of a paper with the aforementioned title by R. Pietroforte, published in this journal (Volume 12, Number 2, May 1998), are presented. The first discusser describes how case studies of civil engineering failures are developed and used at the University of Colorado at Denver and presents a request to members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to contribute well-presented case study examples to be used to develop an ASCE Web site for use by students and teachers in introducing the lessons to be learned from engineering failures. The second discusser suggests additional references to be used in failure analysis courses and describes a national survey he is conducting to determine how civil engineering departments feel about mandating failure analysis as a requirement of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accreditation. Discussions are followed by closure from the author.
