LIMIT ANALYSES OF BRACED AND TIED-BACK EXCAVATIONS IN CLAY
ANALYSE LIMITE DES FOUILLES ETAYEES ET ANCREES DANS L'ARGILE
This paper demonstrates the use of numerical limit analyses for computing lower and upper bounds on the stability of braced excavations in clay. The predictions illustrate limitations in the approximate method of computing basal stability for braced vertical cuts and embedded walls. Predictions of stability for a tied-back wall in Boston are controlled by uncertainties in the undrained strength profile of a deep clay layer. The critical failure mechanism for a section that failed can be well characterized by a deep-seated failure surface below the toe of the wall. According to the limit analyses, the stability of a nearby section with a remedial soil-mix buttress is surprising and can only be explained by a difference in the undrained strengths between the two sections.
