CANADIAN TRANSIT IN TRANSITION. REDEFINING THE PUBLIC SECTOR IN CANADA
The decade of the 1990s has been one of remarkable change for the public sector in Canada, and this has had a significant impact on the Canadian public transportation industry in Canada. The Free Trade Agreement, the recession of the early 1990s, constitutional debates and referenda, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and other major events and forces have contributed to a major rethinking and reshaping of the public sector that continues unabated. Former assumptions about what services and activities the public sector should be engaged in are being questioned, and the appropriate level of government to carry out these services is being redefined. The article examines the impact of these trends on public transit.
