POST-REVOLUTION IN FOREIGN TRADE STATISTICS--IN WATERBORNE COMMERCE--IN AIRBORNE COMMERCE

This paper covers both the content of the current U.S. foreign trade transportation statistics program and developments in the fields of international waterborne and airborne commerce which will have an impact on the program. The effects on the program of current developments in the following areas will be dealt with in this presentation: containerization both in the waterborne and airborne segments of foreign trade; the increasing use of "feeder" vessels in U.S. foreign trade both within the United States and at overseas areas; increasing demand for information on domestic transportation of goods moving in U.S. foreign trade; use of "mini-bridge" in United States foreign trade; increasing use of automated input to foreign trade statistic in lieu of individual documents; use of U.S. foreign trade commodity classification systems in the internal operations of the steamship industry; and changes in the U.S. classification systems which are expected to result from the Trade Act of 1974.
