BUILDING FAST LANES IN VEGAS

Las Vegas, Nevada's 1.3-million population is set to double by 2020 as its casino-hotel industry booms and county and state officials are betting on billions of dollars of new transportation infrastructure to keep pace. That fast pace is evident in the reconstruction of the Interstate 15/U.S. 95 interchange, known popularly as the "Spaghetti Bowl" because of its pasta-like twists of roadways and ramps. Rebuilding the interchange includes four new bridges of segmental concrete, possibly the first time segmental construction has been used in the state. Labor disputes have shaken up the project somewhat. While the Spaghetti Bowl is the main course of Las Vegas' construction menu, the new Las Vegas Beltway offers some hefty side dishes. Work is under way on five contracts covering up to 14 mi(23 km) that are to be completed by the end of 1999. Nearly 7 mi (11 km) of what will be a $1.5-billion, 53-mi (85-km) freeway skirting the county's edges have already been completed.
