PERSISTENT AND CONTINUAL WORSENING OF THE TRAFFIC-ACCIDENT SITUATION IN JORDAN

In Jordan, traffic accident data are not adequately detailed, collected, stored, or analyzed and have never been used by governmental bodies as a unit of analysis when forwarding remedial measures. In addition to describing Jordan's worsening traffic situation in terms of the minimal available numerical and statistical terms, this article describes the situation in terms of examining the area of neglect for which the related governmental bodies are responsible. It includes the royal concern regarding the traffic-accident situation in Jordan and a description of a comprehensive view of the existing situation. A proposed framework for immediate and long-term action plans to combat this continuing epidemic is presented. Based on the presented data and discussion, it is fundamental to expect a persistent and worsening traffic-accident situation in Jordan caused by the following: lack of safety education programs at schools, lack of publicity propaganda campaigns, and lack of specialized units and full-time qualified professionals in the related highway authorities. In addition, there is a lack of adequate vehicle inspection and driver-training programs, a lack of proper legislation and enforcement, a lack of related local research and development, and a general lack of the knowledge related to these issues.
