SLOPE INSTABILITY CAUSED BY SMALL VARIATIONS IN HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by M.E. Reid, published in this journal (Volume 123, Number 8, August 1997), is presented. The discusser raises two concerns: the groundwater flow boundary conditions used in the paper may lead to inaccurate results because flow is directed downward along the upslope no-flow boundary and upward along the downslope boundary, and controlling groundwater obviates the need for engineering conservatism in slope stability analyses. Discussion is followed by closure from the author.
