SOME DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR CONCRETE BEAMS REINFORCED BY GLASS FIBER REINFORCED PLASTICS (GFRP) BARS
This paper presents the results of the work carried out to investigate the validity of using the currently practiced strength and serviceability requirements specified by the ACI-Code, which were developed for steel reinforced concrete (RC) sections to design concrete beams reinforced by fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) materials such as glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP). This study is part of a research program, currently undergoing, to reevaluate the design equations considering the properties of the FRP materials; that is to assure the safety and serviceability conditions. The up-to-date analytical as well as experimental results are presented in this paper. It presents the test results of the first nine beams of the test series. Comparisons between analytical, experimental and the corresponding predicted results using the current ACI design formulas are presented and discussed.
