PASSENGERS ARRIVE AT THE SUPERHIGHWAY CROSSROADS
This article describes the latest technology in advanced passenger information systems for public transit in Europe. For instance, an integrated information system has the following requirements: (1) multimedia mapping - such as GIS or CD-ROM-based systems; (2) multimodal journey planners - on-line database to give timetable and fares information. (3) en route reassurance - departures and arrivals information, based on vehicle tracking systems, with real-time displays at intermediate stops. Many of these facilities are available today, but their introduction has been patchy and localized.
