COMMODITIES AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES
This detailed study of the operation of the motor truck in the Chicago-Northwestern Indiana region, concentrates on the role the truck plays in the regional freight system and the analysis of the goods these vehicles carry. Goods which are transported entirely within the 8-county region (internal flows) are studied as well as goods which display linkages with outside regions (external flows). A 1970 External Weekday Commercial Vehicle Survey was utilized to analyze line haul commodity movements into, out of, and through the study area. The geographical orientation of the tonnage flows, the ranking of external areas, interchange volumes and through trips were studied. Internal commodity tonnage, geographical orientation, commodity classifications, and the utilization of expressways are detailed.
