SELECTIVE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM CHAMPAIGN-INTERIUM EVALUATION REPORT

The Champaign, Illinois Police Department, in conjunction with the University of Illinois Police Department, has been operating a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) since July 1, 1976. Efforts are directed at reducing vehicular accidents resulting from traffic violations within a targeted area that contains ten high-accident intersections. In addition to spending 80 hours of patrol, weekly, within the targeted area, a public information campaign has been conducted. This report assesses the effectiveness of the program at the end of six months. Major findings to date: significant decreases in the speed of motor vehicles; a reduction in the number of violations being committed by motorists; a significant reduction of accidents occurring within the targeted area. Some changes for more effectively utilizing the program's manpower are recommended. /Author/
