A COMPARISON BETWEEN EXISTING ROADING INFRASTRUCTURE AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC ACTIVITY, FOR VARIOUS AREAS OF INDONESIA

In Indonesia the road network as a system of transportation has played an important role in supporting socio economic development. This infrastructure in the last decades has shown its strong influence in many parts of Indonesia, particularly in the western part of the country namely Sumatera, Jawa, and Bali islands. However, there is much formal and informal discussion on development planning for the eastern part of Indonesia. Statistically, the western region is more developed compared with the eastern part of Indonesia. This was caused, among other things, by a limited budget being distributed equally and proportionally to all parts of the country and due to unbalanced population distribution mostly concentrated in the more developed islands such as Jawa, Sumatera, and NW Bali. Therefore the western regions, especially in Jawa and Bali Island have the longest road length compared to the other islands, including Sumatera. It is government national policy to intensively diminish the economic imbalance between the east and west regions. The policy is aimed at concentrating investment, including investment for road infrastructure, more in the eastern region. To achieve an optimal road development plan, there should be intensive observation based on experience in west regional economics. This paper explores road development experiences in Indonesia in general, and particularly in the eastern part of Indonesia, and attempts to analyze the impact of road development on the general economic sector as a basis for deciding on an appropriate road infrastructure for the east region of Indonesia.
