CERTIFICATION FOR THE PROFESSIONAL TRAFFIC OPERATIONS ENGINEER: STATUS AND FUTURE PLANS

Now that the first written examination for certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) has taken place, the chair of the Transportation Professional Certification Board (TPCB) provides information on those who took the examination, when the results will be available, and preparations for the second certification cycle. One hundred forty-three applicants from 41 states and one Canadian province sat for the 6-hour written examination on January 9, 1999, in Washington, D.C. Over half of the applicants are engaged in the private practice of engineering. The second largest cohort represents local government. All candidates will be notified of the outcome by February 10, 1999. Successful candidates will be provided with certificates as PTOEs, which completes the TPCB's first cycle of activity. The second cycle involves writing and validating sufficient new examination items to assure that at least one-third of the examination items will be replaced in the next examination and that that examination, in total, assesses equivalent content and difficulty as the original examination. The TPCB must also establish the specific requirements for recertification at the end of the 3-year certification period.
