CAVES DISCOVERED DURING THE BUILDING OF EXPRESSWAYS IN THE SLOVENE KARST REGION
Karstologists are involved in the construction of the expressways in the karst region. Through preliminary studies, the right-of-way was selected, and through regular karstological monitoring, the karst features were spanned and simultaneously as many of the features as possible were saved. During the construction of the newest section of the expressway, more than 200 caves were opened in the 30 km (18.6 mi) of the right-of-way. Different types of caves reflect the development of the through flow and run-off aquifer due to the lowering of the underground water level and the karst surface.
