LONGER LIFE PAVEMENT
This article describes RICEM, a homopolymer acrylic fiber, which is added to asphalt pavements to add strength. It has been used since 1987 by the French group Jean Lefebvre in 'Gripfibre', a patented process for cold gap-graded bituminous asphalt concrete. The fiber is intended to be used at a very low dosage in hot mix asphalt: 0.5 - 1 percent on bitumen, about 0.025 - 0.05 percent on total mix, to be mixed with the aggregate or 250 - 500 g/cubic meter of asphalt. Other benefits are increased stiffness and viscosity. Tested against alternative fiber products at high temperatures where rutting is a problem, RICEM outperformed all other fibers.
