MARINE FUELS ENERGY CONSERVATION PROGRAM FOR STEAM TURBINE SHIPS
This booklet tells how one vessel operator approached the challenge of conserving fuel and what resulted from these efforts. In 1973, Chevron International's sister company, Chevron Shipping, initiated an Energy Conservation Program. They operate a fleet of about 70 steam-powered tankers which consume roughly 15 million barrels of fuel each year. The objective of this ongoing program is to improve fuel utilization efficiency by 5% through better operating practices both above and below decks. Although this booklet outlines an Energy Conservation Program which was applied to a tanker fleet, most of the underlying principles are equally applicable to other types of steam-powered vessels. The program involves four basic elements: 1. Secure management's commitment to the principle of fuel conservation and organize a management team. 2. Define what's now being done. 3. Establish goals for saving fuel. 4. Put the plan to work and check results. Instruction, supervision, and good communications between management and seagoing personnel are fundamental in an effective fuel conservation program.
