MOVING TRAFFIC WITH RESPONSIVE TRAFFIC SIGNALS
Lexena, Kansas discovered a traffic light that uses video cameras to determine traffic volume and regulate traffic flow at intersections. Motorists no longer wait at a corner when no other vehicles are present, nor do long lines form because of unnecessarily long signal times on less-traveled streets. The Vantage video detection system, manufactured by Odetics ITS (Anaheim, California), includes cameras that are placed facing traffic at each approach to an intersection. The cameras send vehicle counts to the traffic control mechanisms in the intersection's traffic signals, which then adjust change cycles accordingly.
