INACCURACIES ASSOCIATED WITH ESTIMATING RANDOM MEASUREMENT ERRORS. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by M.B. Jaksa, P.I. Brooker, and W.S. Kaggwa, published in this journal (Volume 123, Number 5, May 1997), is presented. The discussion expands on three of the paper's points: the merit of statistical procedures versus curve fitting, the nature of measurement error versus small-scale variation, and the meaning of uncertainty in interpolation of spatial data. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
