OAKLAND PUSHES PORT, AIRPORT PLAN
The Port of Oakland, California, is gearing up for big improvements to its airport and harbor facilities, hoping to attract more passenger and cargo dollars away from rival West Coast cities. Expecting annual passenger growth from 10 million to 14 million, Oakland Airport plans 18 projects, including reconfiguring two existing single-level terminals into one two-level facility with double-decked roadways, a six-level parking structure, and two new concourses with 12 more gates. Port of Oakland officials want to lure cargo business away from two megaports to the south, Los Angeles and Long Beach, with a $900-million, 5-year upgrade, including harbor deepening. Oakland wants the federal government to share 50% of the estimated $250-million dredging cost for a proposed channel deepening.
