BULLET TRAIN GOES DOWN THE DRAIN
The high-speed rail movement in the United States suffered a big setback on January 14, 1999, when Florida Governor Jeb Bush (R) pulled the plug on financing for a $6.3-billion Miami-Orlando-Tampa route that state officials had dreamt of for 20 years. Bush cited doubts about ridership projections, environmental impact, and financial risk, when he also announced that he will not release money previously appropriated for high-speed rail. The Florida Department of Transportation had earmarked $70 million for high-speed rail each year for the next 40 years and had already spent $22.4 million on the 320-mi (515-km) route. State legislative leaders approved Bush's decision on the long-controversial project.
