GROUND-PENETRATING RADAR SHOWS CLEAR INSPECTION IMAGES

A new type of ground-penetrating radar is making waves in bridge deck and pavement inspection. State transportation departments and private building owners are using the system to determine rebar locations and locate defects with new levels of accuracy and less interpretation. In two new systems, electromagnetic pulses are sent into the pavement, where they are reflected at layer interfaces such as rebar and pavement bases. A computer-linked receiver then captures the reflections and records the data to determine layer thicknesses and detect voids.
