IN-SITU AND LABORATORY TESTS ON GLACIAL CLAYS AT REDCAR
A comparison has been made of the undrained shear strength and moduli of two types of glacial clays determined from laboratory tests, pressuremeter tests, cone penetration tests and deep plate loading tests on 865 mm diameter plates. These show that both the laboratory tests and the small field tests can considerably overestimate the operational shear strength of soil as determined by the large plate tests. The operational moduli determined from the plate tests are, however, several times higher than those determined by both laboratory and pressuremeter tests. /Author/TRRL/
