THE NEW CREDIT CARD FORMAT DRIVING LICENCE

On 1 March 1998, South Africa introduced its Credit Card Format (CCF) driving licence, which will replace licences that are currently printed or fixed to pages in identity books. Existing licence holders will be required to replace their current ID book licence with the new CCF licence. The CCF licence has similar shape and size to bank credit cards. Reasons for developing the new licence include convenience, new technology, security, control of illegal licences, and effective traffic policing and management. The format makes the licence much more durable and much easier to handle and keep near the driver. It is almost impossible to forge, because it has several advanced security features which are difficult and costly to reproduce. It will make it practicable to record demerits for offending drivers. Before introducing the new licence, existing road traffic legislation and regulations were amended appropriately, and agreement was reached with relevant transport and traffic authorities. All drivers with legal ID book licences may apply for the new licence at any authorised driving licence testing centre. Benefits of the new system include lower traffic management costs in the medium to long term, better road safety, reduction of accident rate by about 10%, and easier, more effective policing of road users.
