CYLINDER HEAD NOISE REDUCTION ON A 4-CYLINDER 4-VALVE SI ENGINE

Due to decreasing legislative noise limits, the noise emitted by the cylinder head has to be analysed when optimising the noise vibration harshness (NVH) behaviour of an engine. This paper describes investigations concerning valve train excitation, vibration transfer behaviour and noise radiation of a cylinder head including test bed measurements and FEM calculations. The results show, that the main excitation mechanisms are the valve opening and closing impacts. The examined cylinder head structure reveals a high mobility at the bearing pedestals, which is improved by additional inner walls. A laboratory type modification of the cylinder head leads to noise reductions of up to 2 dBA for the pure valve train noise. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD E100043.
