This report covers a programme of research, conducted to assess the custom of the Eastleigh Carrefour and the effects of its opening on patterns of shopping in the area and on existing shopping centres. The main elements of the research programme were: household surveys before and after the opening of the hypermarket; surveys of shoppers at four shopping centres in the area before and after the opening of the hypermarket; a survey of shoppers at the hypermarket; an analysis of turnover data supplied by some of the retailers in shopping centres in the area before and after the opening of the hypermarket.
