THE PEDESTRIAN: PLANNING & RESEARCH. A LITERATURE REVIEW AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
There are two principal parts to this book. Chapters 2-8 review the literature on pedestrian activity, problems and needs, while chapter 9 contains an extensive, partially abstracted bibliography. Chapter 2 reviews pedestrian activity and includes a discussion on predictive modelling. Chapter 3, on accidents and road crossing behaviour, reviews the factors influencing accidents involving pedestrians and discusses research on delays to pedestrians crossing roads and to vehicle users at pedestrian crossings. Chapters 4, 5 and 6 review studies of pedestrian perception, attitudes to environmental factors, and the problems of trip suppression and severance. Chapter 7 looks at physical improvements that have been made to the walking environment, and in chapter 8, the last of the review chapters, a brief guide to UK legislation affecting the pedestrian covers a wide range of topics, including powers for the provision of road crossing facilities and those enabling local authorities to close streets in favour of pedestrians. /TRRL/
