THE DESIGN OF CONCRETE BOX SPINE-BEAM BRIDGES
The report summarises an extensive examination of existing information, with the object of establishing appropriate methods for the analysis and design of concrete rectangular box spine-beam bridges. The methods of analysis recommended in the report are verified by model tests on bridges. The report is divided into three parts, corresponding to the three main stages of the design process. Part 1 provides guide lines and background information on the choice of configuration, method of construction, estimation of leading dimensions, material requirements and probable cost based on data from 173 concrete box beam bridges built throughout the world during the past 15 years. Part 2 compares the available methods of elastic analysis for concrete box beams and concludes that, for a significant proportion of practical cases, methods requiring only the use of a slide rule or programmable desk computer can be recommended. The significance of shear lag, and of warping and distortional effects under eccentric live loading, was examined and simple reliable methods of analysis are recommended. Part 3 compares the results of model tests in pure torsion, bending and shear, and combined loading on model thin-walled prestressed reinforced concrete boxbeams. Design procedures are recommended which are compatible with the test results. The design procedures are shown to be safe with regard to ultimate strength and, in certain cases, conservative.
