AVL AND MORE

This article discusses automatic vehicle location (AVL) technology and Global Positioning System (GPS) applications to the transit industry. In addition to tracking buses en route, AVL systems allow transit operators complete control of on-board peripheral devices and control center database management such as monitoring ridership, evaluation of route efficiency, and fare collection. AVLS systems using GPS technology will also be a means to help the transit industry comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by providing GPS triggered audio and visual announcement systems for the hearing- and sight-impaired.
