MINNESOTA GUIDESTAR

This report provides information on the 1991 transportation research activities of the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Of particular interest is the section on the Minnesota Guidestar Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) program. Activities have been centered around advancing the automation of current traffic management and control practices. The elements for upgrading of the existing traffic management and traveler information system include: ramp meters, CCTV, Highway Advisory Radio, changeable message signs video imaging vehicle detection, fibre optics communications, and HOV lanes. Some of the larger Guidestar research projects include: Genesis (a personal traveler information system), Travlink (an automatic vehicle location and traveler information system), ACTS (a centralized integration of traffic control), human factors research and Roadstar 1 (studying the feasibility of a driverless tractor trailer).
